Applicant Information

All interested UCLA Pediatric subspecialty fellows and Pediatric residents who are or will be engaged in child health basic science, translational, or clinical research that requires big data analysis in the areas of bioinformatics, omics, and computational biology are encouraged to apply.

External individuals (not a UCLA medical education trainee) interested in the program materials are encouraged to contact training grant coordinator Nancy Tadros (ntadros@mednet.ucla.edu) for more information on how to participate. 

 

Application Process

The announcement for trainee applications was released in June 2025 and applications will be accepted until the deadline of September 29th, 2025, for participation in the 2025 Fall program. The program will run the weeks of October 1-December 19, 2025.

Applications require the following:

  • CV
  • Personal statement describing career goals
  • Description of the proposed research project demonstrating the need for educational training in big data analysis in bioinformatics, omics, computational biology
  • Two support letters including one from faculty or faculty mentor to descibe applicant's research and demonstrate the applicant’s motivation to participate in the program and one letter from the training program director to verify that the applicant has protected time to participate in the 12-week program

*For an applicant to be considered and accepted into the R25 program and use the program funds, an applicant must not be receiving any concurrent NIH funding support on another training grant (i.e. T32 or T15).

Research Support

Each internal appointed UCLA medical trainee scholar is awarded $4000 which can be used for research and travel. 

Examples of funding use:

  • Registration fees and presentation costs (i.e. poster printing) at scientific meetings, conferences and other subspecialty conferences
  • Registration for bioinformatics or omics courses or other relevant short-term courses or workshops 
  • Reimbursements for lodging and local or national airfare or other transportation to scientific meetings, conferences, other subspecialty conferences, or courses/workshops
  • Purchasing of research materials, reagents, supplies
  • Purchasing of relevant bioinformatics software
